The Important of Clipping Your Dog’s Nails

How often should I have my dogs nails trimmed?

I recommend having your dog’s nails trimmed once every 2 to 3 weeks. However, some dogs spend a good deal of time outdoors, running on hard surfaces including concrete – which naturally grind their nails down. These dogs do not need to have their nails trimmed as often.

What happens if I don’t get my dogs nails trimmed regularly?

There are actually some health concerns with not keeping your dog’s nails trimmed. Long nails over time can do damage. When a dog’s nail is touching the ground and they walk, it exerts force back onto the dog’s nail bed creating pain and pressure. This sometimes can cause future problems with the dogs’ feet, joints and even legs in extreme cases.

If left too long, some nails can curve and actually start growing into the pad or foot. At this point the dog may even need to be treated by a veterinarian.

What nail services do you offer?

We offer a variety of nail services here at Paw Prints.

Including:
Nail trim – We trim the dogs nails as close as possible ($15)
Nail Dremel: We trim the dogs nails, and then use an electric file to smooth out all edges. Highly recommend for people who have hardwood floors as the nails wont scratch ($18)
Nail Polish: We have a variety of colors of dog safe nail polish that we carefully paint on – this service also includes a nail trim ($25)

A good rule of thumb to know when your dog needs his nails trimmed is if the nails are getting close to touching the ground when they’re standing. While this will be different for each dog , it is important to remember that the more often you get your dogs nails trimmed the more accustomed they will become to the process !
